First Supermoon Of 2023 Will Rise On 3 July

The most recent supermoon that captivated Singaporeans took place on August 11, 2022, and we have yet to witness a similar spectacle this year.

Therefore, moongazers can look forward to the upcoming supermoon on July 3, which will be the first one of this year.

The optimal time to capture a beautiful photo of it would be at 9 PM when it reaches its highest point.

According to the Science Centre Observatory, the supermoon on July 3 will be known as the "buck moon," as reported by The Straits Times.

This name originates from the fact that it coincides with the appearance of new antlers on buck deer, according to the BBC.

A supermoon occurs when the full or new moon coincides with the Moon's closest approach to Earth, according to timeanddate.com.

The July 3 supermoon, also known as the buck moon, will be approximately 362,000 kilometers away from Earth at its closest.

It is expected to rise from the southeast at around 7:13 PM, so Singaporean photographers should be prepared for that moment.

The buck moon will reach its optimal height from 9 PM onwards, providing a prime opportunity for most people to observe it without obstruction from buildings or trees.

It will reach its highest point at 1:25 AM the following day and then descend in the southwest.

As dawn approaches, the buck moon will set at 7:40 AM.

If, for any reason, the July 3 buck moon is missed, there will be three more opportunities to witness a supermoon this year.

August will feature two supermoons—the sturgeon moon on August 1 and the blue moon on August 31.

The final supermoon of 2023 will be the harvest moon on September 29.

The previous buck moon occurred on July 13, 2022, although it was mostly obscured by clouds.

However, a skilled photographer managed to capture its rise behind the Changi Airport control tower two days later.

The last supermoon of 2022 was the Sturgeon Moon on August 11,

which fortunate photographers were able to capture in its full glory as the skies were clear

Get ready to witness the captivating supermoon on July 3 and mark your calendars for the other upcoming supermoons throughout the year.
